Rhizomes

Specialized stem in which main axis grows horizontally at or just below ground surface. Shoots and flowering stems grow upright from rhizome tip or from lateral branches. Example: Sanseveria, iris

Methods of propagation

1. Division - Cut off individual sections at point of attachment to the rhizome. Each piece must have a lateral bud.
2. Culms - The aerial shoot (culm) is used as a cutting by laying it horizontally in a trench. Can also plant stem cutting of 3-4 nodes vertically.
