Fr. Peter Anderson, OP, was the first American priest to come into the California Territory during the Gold Rush..  He was the first to say mass, in 1850, at fifth and L streets, Sacramento.  He later made plans to build Saint Rose of Lima's church at seventh and K streets.  During the great cholera epidemic of 1850, he was in contant demand helping the sick, the homeless and dying.
