Dr. Duvall discusses Californians, adopted Californians, and visitors, both civilian and of the services.  He describes Fremont, Stockton, Sutter, General Vallejo and his family, Dr. John Marsh, Merrit, and Neal.  Outstanding narratives include the trip of the Portsmouth's launch to Fremont with supplies, Sutter's establishment, the Berryesa and Haro Killings, and the "battle" of Santa Clara.
