ADVENTITIA

SEROSA OR ADVENTITIA: This is the outermost layer of the alimentary canal. Those portions that are affixed to adjacent tissues (e.g., esophagus and anal canal) have an outer layer of ADVENTITIA composed of loose connective tissue. Those portions located within the abdominal cavity are covered by a layer of SEROSA which is composed of a single layer of squamous cells and an underlying connective tissue. The entire G.I. tube is suspended within the body cavity by a MESENTERY through which blood vessels, nerves and lymphatics pass to the organ systems.
