Structure List
Down feather
Flight feather
Shaft
Barbs
Barbules

The vane of flight (contour) feathers is formed by parallel rows of barbs arising from the shaft, interlocked via barbules and hooklets. If the BARBS become separated, the bird can interlock them again by preening its feathers.
The barbs of down feathers are not held together by the barbules and hooklets, so the feather appears fluffy.
