| The barbules of flight feathers have hooklets (can't be easily seen) which allow them to interlock with adjacent barbs to form the vane. The barbules of down feathers lack hooklets, so the barbs are not precisely arranged. Flightless species such as the ostrich lack feathers with hooklets, and the feathers appear fluffy. |
