The cells of the nervous system are divided into two major types:
- Neurons; the primary communicating cells. There are a variety of subtypes of neurons, having different numbers of processes and cell body shapes. Collections of cell bodies (nuclei) make up the gray matter. The axons connecting nuclei form the white matter.
- Glial Cells; the primary supportive cells. There are a variety of subtypes of glia.
The cells are similar in all three classes of animals, but the arrangements of these cells are different. |
