Cellular CNS Review

  • The cell bodies of neurons are discrete groups called nuclei or gray matter. The axons of neurons connect the nuclei by travelling in bundles or tracts of white matter.
  • The gray matter of the spinal cord is divided into ventral motor areas and dorsal sensory areas, with increased amounts at the level of the limb input.
  • Neurons form chemical synapes with other cells. The presynaptic terminal contains vesicles with neurotransmitter.
  • Glial Cells, the primary supportive cells come in a variety of subtypes. Oligodendrocytes form CNS myelin; Astrocytes provide structural frameworks.
