| The deep structures of the brain are quite complex. Try to identify the following: corpus callosum, thalamus, hypothalamus, ventricular system, the pineal body and part of the brainstem (midbrain, pons, medulla). The pineal was once thought to be the seat of human consciousness. In some reptiles and amphibians, this structure is a light-sensitive organ and has been referred to as the third eye. Notice the relationship of the cerebellum to the brainstem. The brainstem is the intermediary between the cortex and cerebellum and the spinal cord. |
