The Nervous System

The nervous system, along with the endocrine system, allows communication among the cells of the organism. The nervous system detects stimuli from the internal or external environment, integrates this information, and produces an appropriate response by its control of the activities of other organs and tissues. Nervous system cells are specialized for these communication functions. The cells have been organized into different functional groups in the brain and spinal cord. While cellularly similar, the brain organization of fish, birds and mammals animals have evolved in different ways.
