The nervous system can be divided into two major portions:
- The central nervous system (CNS) consisting of the brain and spinal cord.
- The peripheral nervous system (PNS) consisting of the nerves connecting the CNS with all the other parts of the body.
All nervous tissue is made of two major cell types, neurons and glia. The cell bodies of peripheral neurons are found in groups called ganglia. The processes (axons) of the neurons travel in nerve bundles. Glial cells are found supporting neurons in both ganglia and nerves. |
