MAGNUM. The oviduct of birds has five parts. The longest and most coiled part of the oviduct is the magnum (pars albuminifera). The wall is much thicker than other parts of the oviduct because of elongated tubular glands in the lamina propria. The epithelium contains both ciliated cells and secretory cells. The material in the secretory cell granules is the egg-white protein (albumin) which coats the egg during the three hours it takes to pass down the magnum. Some of the glands in the magnum are active with albumin. Others are not.
