VAGINA OF THE BIRD. The oviduct of birds has five parts. It takes about 24 hours for an egg to travel from the infundibulum to the vagina. The vagina is S-shaped and about 8 cm long. It is separated from the uterus by a sphincter. In the region of the sphincter there are folds of mucosa which serve as a site for the storage of sperm. The muscles in the wall are thicker than any other portion of the oviduct. Their purpose is to move the egg rapidly out of the reproductive system .
