PENIS OF THE DOG. The penis of mammals is a highly vascularized structure. In dogs and most other carnivores, the penis contains a bone called the os penis. Using the diagram on these cross sections of the penis, identify the vascular tissue in the pars longa glandis. Find the U-shaped os penis and identify the urethra, which is lined by transitional epithelium. Identify the corpus spongiosum. Both the corpus spongiosum and the pars longa glandis are filled with blood sinuses, or venus plexuses. Look for small, highly muscular arterioles which regulate blood flow to the sinuses.
