All epithelial cells lie on a basement membrane which serves to anchor the cells. These sheets of cells cover body surfaces and line cavities. All materials that enter or leave the body do so through an epithelial membrane. Functions of epithelia include protection, absorption and secretion. There are various types of epithelium.
