Neurons are the cells that carry out the essential function of nervous tissue: communication. They are the primary structural and functional unit of the nervous system. They have the capacity to react to various physical and chemical stimuli (irritability) and the ability to transmit the resulting excitation from one locality to another (conductivity). There are many morphological types of neurons.
