| The larynx is a musculocartilaginous organ guarding the entrance to the trachea. The larynx serves as an air passageway, aids vocalization, participates in coughing, and prevents the inspiration of foreign material. The hyoid apparatus is an articulation of bones that acts to suspend the tongue and the larynx beneath the skull. Note on the prosection the following: EPIGLOTTIS, VESTIBULAR FOLD, LATERAL LARYNGEAL VENTRICLE, and VOCAL FOLD. The vocal ligament and the vocalis muscles are enclosed in the vocal fold. A triangular piece of the vocal fold is cut and removed when debarking dogs. |
