Using the dissecting microscope, compare the basic microanatomical features which are the same and different between dog and bird. The mucosal surface lines the airspace. In the bird it has outpocketings of mucous cells. In the dog it has extensive glands which project into the submucosa. The submucosa in the bird is very small; that in the dog very large by comparison. The cartilage in the adventitia in the dog is not complete and a smooth muscle connects the open area of the cartilage. In the bird, the cartilage ring is complete and muscle is difficult to define.
