This is a lateral view of the gills and opercular chamber of a fish. Gill filaments are seen projecting from the most superficial branchial (gill) arch. There are several more arches medial to the one seen. The gill rakers act as a coarse filter to prevent large debris from entering the opercular cavity and damaging the gills.
