This is a scanning and transmission electron microscopic comparison of the organization of fish gills. The figure on the left is a low magnification tangential section through the fish gill filament which shows a cartilage in the filament (No. 1), lamellae (No. 2), afferent filament vessel (No. 3) and an efferent filament vessel (No. 4). The photo on the right is an illustration of the surface topography of gill filaments (No. 1) and lamellae (No. 2).
