This cast of a fish gill shows the afferent vascular supply to a fish gill. The afferent branchial artery is in the background. It gives off branches to each gill filament (primary lamella). Note there are two rows of white tufts joining these vessels. These are the secondary lamellae, where diffusive exchange with the water occurs.
