Type II cells are metabolically active and contain numerous cell organelles. In addition, they contain lamellar bodies which secrete pulmonary surfactant. Pulmonary surfactant is vital for preventing alveolar collapse. Type II cells are also important for repopulating Type I and Type II cells. Unlike Type I cells, Type II cells are resistant to many air pollutants.
