Alveolar epithelium is composed of two cell types: the TYPE I SQUAMOUS CELL and the TYPE II CUBOIDAL ALVEOLAR CELL. Most of the alveolus is lined by Type I cells, but Type II cells are interspersed between the Type I cells.
