PULMONARY ARTERIES (blue) carry non-aerated blood from the right ventricle of the heart to the lungs. The PULMONARY VEINS return aerated blood from the lungs to the left atrium of the heart for distribution throughout the body. The pulmonary arteries generally follow bronchi and bronchioles, while the pulmonary veins often run separately. The lung is an effective filter preventing the spread of emboli and tumor cells. This is the reason for abscesses and tumors metastasizing in the lung, secondary to diseases of other organs.
