Welcome to beginning Chinese language at UC Davis. This is the first part of a yearlong course in Beginning Chinese. The dialect taught is Mandarin and the course is designed for students who have had no prior exposure to Chinese language. All students who have not taken any Chinese language course at UCD before are asked to take the placement evaluation at the beginning of the term.

Check out the syllabus to see how the course is set up. An overview of the entire quarter may be found on the calendar. Then, go to the top of the page and see the lesson-by-lesson preparation guide (in the upper-right-hand corner of this page) to find out what you need to do each day. Please note that, prior to the start of each lesson, I may make small adjustments to the assignments for that lesson, but the overall structure will remain the same. Just below the prep guide, the on-line resources have important information as well as games to help you learn. The on-line resources also include a link to free Chinese fonts for Windows, which you may need to read some of the pages. Mac users can get the Chinese language kit bundled in with the most recent version of their OS. If you have any questions, just email me. We have a great year ahead of us.
