Chinese Language Placement, Fall 2004

last revised September 23, 2004

Our Chinese program strives to place students into appropriate sections for their background. We look forward to helping you to find the right class to meet your needs.

f you intend to enroll in or have registered for a Chinese language course but did not take any Chinese course in the past two years at UCD, you must take a Chinese language placement evaluation before the school starts or at the very beginning of the quarter. According to the evaluation result, you will be directed to the appropriate course for your level.

Depending on your Chinese competence, the placement evaluation may take 30 to 90 minutes. You do not need to prepare for the evaluation.

The time and place of the placement evaluation for this Fall quarter are as below:

September 20-24 (Monday through Friday) 9:30-12 noon & 1:00-4:00pm in 303 Sproul Hall.

If you cannot make it during the above time, you should make appointment with the program coordinator, Prof. Chengzhi Chu, and try to take the test as early as possible. Prof. Chu's email is: czchu@ucdavis.edu.

At this time, we are not issuing PTA numbers. Based on previous quarters, students whose initial position on the waiting list is between 1-10 have a good chance of being enrolled automatically as others drop or switch to more appropriate sections.

Below our coordinator, Professor Chu, has kindly provided answers to the Frequently-asked Questions about placement. Best wishes for the start to a great year!

Chinese Language Placement Evaluation: FAQ and Answers (9/22/04)

Q-1: I will not be able to take the Chinese language placement evaluation this week
(Sept 20-24), can I do it at a later time?

A: Yes, you can. To accommodate your needs, we have arranged the following more time slots for you to take the evaluation during the Orientation Week (Sept 27-Oct. 1):

9/27 Monday: 9:15-12:30pm & 1:15-4:00pm
9/28 Tuesday: 1:15-4:00pm
9/29 Wednesday: 9:15-12:30pm & 1:15-4:00pm
9/30 Thursday: 9:15-12:30pm & 1:15-4:00pm
10/1 Friday: 9:15-12:30pm & 1:15-3:00pm

Now you don¡¦t need to make any appointment. Just come to 303 Sproul during one of the above time slot to do it. But please note: For having more chance to enroll in an appropriate class, you should take the evaluation as early as possible, and no later than the Orientation Week.

Q-2: I know for sure that I will be at the first and most basic level class since I did not take any Chinese course before or have any other Chinese language background. Do I still have to take the placement evaluation?

A: Yes, you do. You still need to come to complete a questionnaire and have a short oral
interview with one instructor.

Q-3: How long does the evaluation take?

A: 20 to 90 minutes, depending on your Chinese competence.

Q-4: How should I prepare for the placement evaluation?

A: You don¡¦t need to prepare. The purpose of the evaluation is to identify your Chinese competence so that to direct you to the appropriate class level.

Q-5: Last year, I took a Chinese placement test but, since my Chinese 1 class was
canceled, I wasn't able to take the class. So, I was wondering whether that test
would count for placement into a class now.

A: As we have re-designed the evaluation procedure this year, you should take the evaluation again. BTW, I feel very sorry that we had to cancel a section last year for certain reason beyond our control.
