Lesson 16, Pattern 1: Measurement of Action practice

last revised May 20, 2004

In the lesson you learn how to say how many times a person does something. Later in your study of Chinese, you will come back to this pattern and add another level of complexity, but for now we will start with the basic pattern. Note that, if a sentence has an object, the type of object makes a difference in word order. Also note that can be replaced with (bian4) with no change in meaning.

If the object is a personal pronoun, it must come before Number-. If it is a person or place, it may go either before or after Number-, while any other type of object must come after Number-. Another option is to use the -construction or to prepose the object. Here are some examples.

(preposed object)
S
Time
-N
etc.
(Adv) V
(O)
Number-
