Science in the News
Instructor: Leo Chalupa, Department of Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior, College of Biological Sciences
Description: To introduce freshman students to writings about science in the popular press, we will meet and discuss the articles published in the Tuesday’s Science edition of the New York Times. The students will be expected to read all articles dealing with any aspect of the life sciences as well as articles about medicine. Each student will be prepared to summarize and discuss the content of every read article. In addition, while reading the articles, the students will underline any words in the text whose meaning they are not familiar with so as to expand their vocabulary.
Format: Class meetings will be one hour per week. The students will learn how to read scientific articles in America’s leading newspaper so as to increase to scientific knowledge as well as increase their vocabulary. Students will be required to purchase Tuesday’s edition of the NY Times that contains a Science section. Grading: Grading will be based on degree and quality of class participation.
