Description:This course, an introduction to Indian Classical Music, will engage the student in singing and learning the basic structure of select ragas while also learning voice training skills. Individual and group singing of defined compositions will be encouraged along with a discussion of the soul-stirring spiritual qualities rooted in what is acclaimed to be one of the oldest musical traditions in the world. No prior experience is required to enroll in the class.
Format:The class will meet for two hours, one day a week (Friday from 12- 2 pm). Grading:The course will be letter graded and the grade will be based on classroom participation, homeworks and an in-class final performance of a short (5 or 6 minute) singing piece based on the material taught during the quarter.
About the Instructors: Subhash Risbud is the Director of the Internship and Career Center and Distinguished Professor at UC Davis. He has been a student of Indian Classical Music for over 15 years and is dedicated to promoting the teaching and learning of music and its connection to Indian culture and spirituality.
Shubhangi Sakhalkar, a well known Indian classical music teacher, is a gifted artist who continues to inspire and draw many students to music. Well known to the UC Davis community, she has been a Guest Lecturer and performer at UC Davis (through SPICMACAY) with a teaching style that is highly appreciated by previous students. In addition to formal college training in music (Masters degree with a Gold Medal) she has received several years of one-on-one training from renowned gurus in India. Shubhangi is frequently invited to perform all over the United States and worldwide--she and recently returned from a number of concerts in Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, and Dubai.
