The TRC invites you to join a 2-day institute
exploring some advanced applications of educational technology.
- Present your own educational technology experiences to colleagues (e.g.,
lessons learned, promising practices, next steps, etc.)
- Work on your own educational technology project with expert assistance
(bring your own laptop)
- Network with colleagues
The goal of this institute is to provide a forum for advanced
users of educational technology to share their experiences, learn from each
other's success and failures, and work at their own pace on a project with
one-on-one support available. We will provide lunch and snacks.
DETAILS
Laptop: You will be expected to provide your own laptop
with any necessary software.
Presentation: All participants
will be expected to give a brief presentation on
their current uses of technology in teaching. Depending
on enrollment numbers, we may group presentations
together.
Project: One of the most consistent
comments that we have heard from faculty is that they would like to leave
an Institute with a ‘finished
product’. This institute is designed to give you time to work,
on your own laptop, on your own project, with expert staff assistance available.
Examples might include
- Redesigning a course curriculum to take advantage
of Course Management tools (MyUCDavis): i.e., selective release,
glossary functions, online quizzing, online communication tools.
- Rethinking and redesigning your in-class
presentations:
e.g., incorporating more features of PowerPoint, active learning principles, ‘smart board’ (e.g.,
e-Beam), Personal Response Systems, student computers, etc.
- Perfecting your digital images. Editing digital
images (cropping, retouching, rotating, color balancing, etc). Use Almagest to catalog and add
metadata to your digital assets. Build lectures from Almagest or
through PowerPoint. (You will want to arrange for any scanning to
be done before the beginning of the workshop)
- Rethinking and redesigning assignments
and assessment. Incorporating
peer review of assignments, collecting and grading electronic documents,
designing assignments that are more relevant to the ‘Information
Age’, online quizzes, designing assignments to help focus students’ study
time, solutions for exams and assessments in large classes, etc.
