| Notes from the 2/2/04 Faculty Roundtable "To PowerPoint or Not to PowerPoint" Reviewed some of the mis-uses of PowerPoint -- too much text, and reading it, being the major one. Too much information on a single slide being another. Turning down lights is an invitation to disengagement. A couple of instructors provide students with lecture outlines before the class. Then show images in class only. Do not make them available on website. This is a way to deal with issue of students' feeling no need to attend class if PowerPoint material is made available to them. Emphasized need to be sensitive to pacing, not go too fast. Concern with fostering student passivity -- some suggestions: Type a question on the slide. Use the overhead projector with a blank transparency to make annotations on the PowerPoint slide. During the lecture, Stop. Ask them for questions. Provide variety, keep students engaged.
