    LINGUISTICS 25: English for International ESL & Graduate Students

    4 units, Lecture 3 hrs/Lab 3 hrs
    Prerequisite: admission by placement examination; admission limited to international graduate students and limited status (international) undergraduate students. Develops skills needed for studying on the graduate level: note-taking on lectures and on written academic material, writing logically and accurately under time pressure, giving oral presentations, systematically extending vocabulary, and writing a research paper. May be repeated for credit with consent of coordinator. (Former course English 25.) (P/NP grading only.)

    LINGUISTICS 391: Oral English Skills for ESL Students

    3 units, Lecture 2 hrs/Lab 2 hrs
    Prerequisite: open only to non-native speakers of English students with priority enrollment to international student teaching assistants; completion of any required ESL courses or consent of instructor. Course gives non-native English-speaking students, particularly international student teaching assistants, intensive work in oral English to increase fluency, accuracy, and use of appropriate discourse strategies in academic settings (e.g., seminar, discussion, laboratory). Course may be repeated for credit with consent of coordinator. (S/U grading only.)

Teaching Resources Center - 752-6050

All TAs have access to confidential consultation and individual assistance in improving teaching skills. TAs may request mid-quarter course evaluations, classroom observations, videotaping or other forms of assistance. Individual or small group tutoring for improving oral English is also available. Workshops and programs on teaching, some designed particularly for international Teaching Assistants, are offered several times a year.Phrase By Phrase, a 16-part auto-tutorial videotape series is also available. TAs can work with the tapes by making an appointment with the staff in the Teaching Resources Center. In addition, supplemental tutoring is recommended. Learning Skills Center - 752-2013

The Intercultural Exchange Project - Sponsored by the UC Language Learning Center (49 Olson Hall) and the LSC Learning Room (2211 Dutton Hall), the Intercultural Exchange Project offers additional opportunities for speaking English. International students and scholars who are learning English and English speakers who are studying foreign languages sign up on a referral list and then arrange to meet each other for conversation in their shared languages. .Conversation & Culture - A workshop (non-credit class) for English as a Second Language students who want to improve their conversational English skills. The informal discussions include a wide variety of topics, idioms, and vocabulary necessary for social and professional life in the United States, so students should come to the workshop sessions with questions and ideas to share. (8 one-hour sessions) Enrollment open all quarter.

Pronunciation Principles & Practice Workshop - A workshop providing an overview of American English pronunciation. Discussion focuses on those elements of spoken language that are most important to meaning and communication. Each week principles of pronunciation, along with many practice exercises and strategies for improving fluency in spoken English, are presented. (6 one-hour sessions)

Conversational English Class - Designed to supplement formal ESL instruction, the emphasis is on speaking and hearing English in a comfortable and friendly atmosphere. This class meets in the Community Room of Orchard Park on Fridays from 1:30 - 3:00 pm. Registration is $5.00. Ask for Kathie Elliot.

ESL Classes - All Levels - No tuition fee. These classes provide students with the opportunity to increase their use and understanding of everyday American English. All levels will emphasize conversational skills, but also will include grammar, listening comprehension and vocabulary expansion. Enrollment is open throughout the quarter. All new students will take a placement test. This test is given every Monday and Tuesday evening during the first month of the quarter promptly at 7:00 pm. Although there are both day and evening classes, the placement test is given to all new students in the evening hours only.

International House, Davis - 753-5007
Foreign Language Conversation Classes - French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Spanish Conversation groups meet weekly. Other groups may convene at any time. There are no fees, though participants must be I-House members. $15.00 per year. Scheduled classes meet at the International House and conversation classes can also be arranged in private homes.

International Training and Education Center (ITEC) - 757-8686
The ITEC has offered English language, technical and professional training to international clients for more than 25 years. Several programs are available, such as The Conversation Management Program, American Culture and Communication Program, Intensive TOEFL¨ Institute, and many others. A variety of supplemental classes can also be taken, including TOEFL¨ Strategies, TOEIC¨ Preparation, Accent Improvement, Practical English Plus, and private tutoring (from $25.00 per hour) as well.
