Options for Online Course Material
This feature on the campus portal makes it very easy for instructors to post information for regularly scheduled classes. See the MyUCDavis Proxy Instructions (to add a TA or staff to your site)
2. Mediaworks provides high-end digital production.
They can help you create 'digital assests' to incorporate in your online class: animations, video, etc. They can also assist you in putting a class completely on-line.
3.Commercially available options:
There are a number of tools 'out there' that are available either for free, a nominal fee, or an extravagent amount. The two market leaders (at the moment) are WebCT and Blackboard. These are 'Swiss Army Knife' solutions to online course management, each having quizzes, threaded discussion, course content, glossary, chat room, and gradebook, to name a few.
The Davis campus does not host either of these solutions, however, each is available directly from the company on a fee-per-class basis.
4. Do it yourself.
Request space on the TRC webserver, or on your departmental server and start from scratch. The most commonly used web authoring software on campus is Dreamweaver (available for in bookstore). Tutorial and training are available. See also The Arbor
5. Check that you aren't reinventing the wheel and/or share the fruits of your labor.
There are many sources of educational content out there. Here are two that we recommend:
UCOP Teaching Learning and technology Center - Who's Doing What? database.
Find out what your UC colleagues are up to.MERLOT - peer-reviewed resource for 'learning objects' in almost every discipline.
