Educational Technology Resource Award (ETRA)

What is an ETRA?

Academic Technology Services provides services to faculty free of charge if the application is for instruction and falls within Academic Technology Services’ limited budget. ETRAs cover the cost of in-house labor (i.e. resources) to produce a project for you. If there are external costs or unusual supplies expenses incurred in your production, ATS passes those costs on to you.

Criteria for Application

There are two kinds of ETRAs: small and large.  The following criteria must be met by all proposals:

  • The request is for a regularly scheduled course, or series of courses, at UC Davis.
  • The final product would clearly benefit the teaching/learning process.
  • The final product makes effective use of the requested technology.
  • Academic Technology Services has the expertise in-house to do the project.
  • Academic Technology Services has staff available to do the project on the date(s) requested in the application.

Additional guidelines for small ETRAs

  • Programming or animation consultation: hours not to exceed 16 hours. (e.g. for planning a larger project, brainstorming for technology options to present specific course content, advanced training on multimedia software (e.g. FlashMX, CFMX, Photoshop).
  • Graphics and Illustrations: original artwork, consulting and or training, not to exceed 16 hours.
  • Video / Audio productions or consultations: (e.g. recording a lecture or instructional event, video editing and Web streaming; multi-camera shoot up to 3 hours), not to exceed 16 hours.

Please note: Any project cost or time estimate that exceeds the allotment mentioned above is considered a large ETRA.

Deadline for small ETRAs: None.  Applications for small ETRAs are reviewed throughout the year.

How to Apply: Apply for a small ETRA via Academic Technology Services.

Additional guidelines for large ETRAs

  • For winter and spring projects, apply in the fall. (November 17, 2008)
  • For summer and fall projects, apply in the spring. (April 20, 2009)
  • In spring 2009, the application process for large ETRAs was merged with the UIIP grant review process.  For more detailed review criteria that apply to both UIIP and ETRA grants, see the UIIP proposal review criteria.
  • At the close of your project, provide an evaluation of the project, reflecting student responses, and any other evaluation that the instructor chooses to perform.

Deadlines for large ETRAs:  November 17, 2008 and April 20, 2009

How to apply: Large ETRA and Undergraduate Instructional Improvement Program grants use the same application process.  You may apply for UIIP and ETRA grants to support the same project, using the same application form from the Teaching Resources Center.
